I am going to do a test shoot to try out various methods of paint swirling so I can see which ones work most effectively. The ingredients I will be experimenting with are:
- Ink
- Liquid acrylic
- Watercolour paint
- Milk
- Oil
- Water
- Dishwasher liquid/ liquid soap
For my first attempt I used a large bowl which I filled with water. I added small drops of ink and milk which worked quite well however the white of the milk made the colours of the inks a lot more subtle and less vibrant.
The next time I used a larger quantity of ink and added dishwasher soap which reacted in the water and made the ink swirl around.

I tried this again but the effect was less noticeable so I used ink and oil which I think was the best combination. The colours weren't diluted by other products and the oil created bubbles which floated on the surface of the water.
I also tried recreating Alberto Seveso's ink in water photography in moving image form and this works quite well too. I filled a glass with water and put it in front of a white background. I then injected the ink directly into the water and it created a coloured cloud effect.

I think some of my test footage is good enough to include in my final film however I was using my own Canon 1100d with an 18-55 lens which isn't very good quality and some of the shots are quite out of focus so I am going to try using a Canon 70d with a 50mm lens and see if this improves the image quality.
I also need to think about lighting when I film because in a number of the shots there are reflections on the water of the light coming through the window so I will have to make sure that I do my paint experiments out of direct sunlight.
In terms of sound I am looking for an instrumental track which will help create a dreamlike feel. If I am unable to find a suitable track I might use a range of sound effects from soundbible.com and create an abstract sound.
